A message from Kestrel Heights Charter School:

As previously communicated, the NC Charter School Advisory Board (CSAB) met today to review findings from the investigation conducted by the Kestrel Heights School Board (KHS Board), specific to the issue regarding the discrepancy with high school student transcripts that was self-reported by the KHS leadership team and Board earlier this academic year. CSAB has made several recommendations for consideration by the NC State Board of Education that we wish to share:

First, CSAB acknowledged the strong track record KHS has with its K-8 program, and has recommended to the NC State Board of Education that the K-8 program be granted a 3-year charter renewal. The KHS Board recognizes the success of our K-8 program, and believes the CSAB recommendation is a testament to the excellent work being done by teachers, parents and students in grades K-8.

Unfortunately, CSAB has recommended that the new charter renewal no longer include the high school grades 9-12. This is not the final decision; the NC State Board of Education will have the opportunity issue its final decision at a later date. Should the State Board of Education follow the recommendation, then this action would make the KHS Class of 2017 the last high school students to graduate from Kestrel Heights for the foreseeable future. We are collectively disappointed in the recommendation to close the high school, and the KHS Board is exploring all available options in light of CSAB’s recommendation. We realize this generates many questions, and while we don’t have answers right now, we believe it is important to share with our community what we know as quickly as possible, and we will continue to do so as the situation unfolds.

In order to answer questions and address any comments or concerns, school leadership and the Board of Directors will have a community meeting Wednesday January 18th 6:30 in the open space between the elementary and middle school.

We remain committed to ensuring a quality education for each and every Kestrel student, and we thank you for your continued patience and support during this challenging time for our school and the students and teachers that may be impacted. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Tracy at 919-484-1300 ext. 201, or tracy@kestrelheights.org.
