Fall Backpacking Trip

Dates: September 29 to October 1.

Location: Mount Evans Wilderness Area

Description: This is a true backcountry camping experience. We will be hiking on established trails and staying at pre-existing backcountry sites, but there will be no bathrooms! We will be cooking all of our food on camp stoves and carrying all gear on our backs. Temperatures could drop below freezing at night.

This trip is designed for the beginner as well as the experienced camper. We will spend a great amount of time teaching the students how to travel and camp comfortably and safely in the backcountry, incorporating Leave No Trace practices into everything that we do.

Safety is obviously a main concern. If the weather forecast for that weekend looks grim, we may have to postpone or cancel the trip. The maximum group size is 12, and there will be at least two faculty chaperones. All faculty chaperones have had significant wilderness experience, and all are first aid and CPR certified. At least one chaperone will have a Wilderness First Responder certification.

Equipment Needed: KDS can provide nearly all of personal gear needed for this trip, including backpacks, sleeping bags, ground pads, tents, water purification, cooking equipment, and eating utensils. Students will only need to bring clothes and footwear. A complete packing list will be provided before the trip.

Cost: There will be no cost associated with this trip.
