Yearbook and Inkblot looking for Sponsors
The 2018-19 Kealing Yearbook and Inkblot staff are currently taking sponsor donations. Donations support production (yearbook, Inkblot and KBTV), but most importantly are used to offset the cost of production, to make publications more accessible to all Kealing students. In addition, donations are also used to grant Yearbook and/or Inkblot Scholarships for involved Kealing students who wish to have a 2019 yearbook or Inkblot, but can't otherwise purchase one on  their own.

Interested sponsors should consider donating at their own comfort level. Patrons/sponsors will have their name published in either the yearbook/Inkblot or both, depending on donation level.

You can easily contribute using schoolcashonline. See attached instructions. Or checks can be made payable to Kealing Middle School and delivered to Ms. Scott in room 236.  THANKS!

Human trafficking is a media buzz word that often conjures images of foreign countries or confusion with the ongoing immigration debate. This workshop cuts through the confusion, arms the participant with an understanding of what human trafficking is and is not and helps them recognize that this is an American problem with American buyers, sellers and victims. It focuses our attention on children who are regularly exploited but are unlikely to self-identify as victims or seek help. This seminar walks participants through actual cases prosecuted in the state of Texas for illustration, identifies the tools of traffickers and how they are typically utilized to obtain and maintain victims, outlines victim needs and the barriers to identification and rehabilitation, and gives participants red flags and interview tips that they can use to begin the identification process.

Kealing PTA Issue Awareness
The Legislature starts next week.  Texas PTA has a list of priorities, and one of them is to increase funding for all Texas schools. Dear Secret Pal, you all are the best!!! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for my wonderful gifts and my nutcracker will have a "special place" this year in my home. Wishing you and your family a Safe and Happy Holiday!

Please tell my adopted family that I LOVE the multi-tool and bike repair kit! I love it when I get presents that I can use! Thanks so much.

Hello! Please pass on my enthused thank-yous to my Secret Pals for their generous gifts! It really lifts the spirits this time of year.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful gift of treats that you recently delivered for me. All of my favorite snacks were in there, and two varieties of each one! My family and I all like Taco Cabana, and we will be enjoying some of their food this weekend. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness.

CAMPUS NEWS
Be the One Presentation for 7th Grade
The Kealing Guidance Department is making a presentation to all 7th grade students, through advisory, beginning on November 7th thru the 9th. The goal is to instruct them on how they can “Be the One” to help a friend who is struggling with depression or hurting themselves. The presentation goes over the signs of depression and the ways to help friends cope. We will also discuss what to do when friends are hurting themselves and/or are having suicidal thoughts. Counselors will encourage all students to tell an adult if someone expresses thoughts of hurting themselves; this includes telling their parents, especially if they learn of a student’s thoughts outside of the school setting.

Counselors will share the number to a help hotline, the National Suicide Prevention LifeLine, at 1 (800) 273- TALK. or to text CONNECT to 741741 to chat with a crisis counselor. Please feel free to pass this information onto others. If your student communicates to you that one of their friends is having suicidal thoughts. Please either contact their parents or the police, who have mental health officers that can check on them in their home. Other resources can be found under the HELP tab on the Counseling Website: http://kmsguidance.weebly.com/ All it takes is one person to “Be the One” to save another’s life.

PE waivers - 7th and 8th graders
Off Campus Physical Education or PE Waivers for the Spring semester must be submitted to AISD no later than November 15, 2018. Students will need a counselor's signature before they can submit their application. PE Waiver applications WILL NOT be accepted in January.

MacTheatre Presents: A Midsummer Night's Dream, Nov 8-11
Enter the enchanted land of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream when MacTheatre takes you on a magical adventure through a lush forest besieged by starry-eyed love triangles and feuding fairy kingdoms, awash with magic at every turn. A story of order and disorder, reality and appearance, and love and marriage. The play’s four stories are woven together in a single fateful night: the wedding of the Athenian Duke to his Queen, the misadventures of four lovers lost in the enchanted forest, an uproarious throw-down between the King and Queen of the Fairies, and an entertaining quarrel amongst amateur actors in a troupe.

A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare’s happiest and most beloved comedies. It is called a ""Dream"" because of the unrealistic events the characters experience in the play — real, yet unreal, such as crossed lovers, meaningless quarrels, forest chases leading to more confusion, and magic spells woven by the infamous Puck.

The lunatic, the lover, and the poet, are of imagination all compact” but audiences of all ages can enjoy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a classic celebration of love, innocence, and merry meddling.

- Tickets may be purchased in advance at https://mccallum.ludustickets.com/
- Student tickets are $7; adults are $16, and seniors are $12. Add $2 for tickets purchased at the door, except at the student rate.
- Group rates for groups of 10 or more receive a 10% discount when purchasing tickets online.
- Midsummer runs November 8-11, 2018; All shows start at 7 pm, except for Sundays. Sunday shows start at 2 pm.
- Location is the Fine Arts Building Theatre at 5600 Sunshine Dr. Austin, TX 78756

AISD Budget shortfall
If you are not aware, AISD is facing a 30 million shortfall in their upcoming budget.
  • There are a lot of different people looking at all the options and providing suggestions on where to cut.
  • One question stood out to me:   “How do we find a way to create revenue?”.  AISD faces pressure that our building and grounds are for the public to use.    Currently we have community groups and youth sport for profit groups that use AISD facilities and do not even pay for the janitorial costs.
  • Perhaps given AISD’s financial situation, we need to rethink this?  What do you think? Email president@kealingpta.org if you want to join the conversation.
