The application process for the 2018-2019 school year is complete.  However, the information below will provide an idea of the process for following years.

For more than two decades, students from all over Austin have chosen to attend the Kealing Magnet Program for advanced academic opportunities.  The Kealing Magnet Program has a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence. The program offers students a rigorous, relevant and exciting curriculum: core classes at a more advanced level than Pre-AP honors classes and elective classes that are tailored to meet the unique interests of Kealing students.

1. Go to the Parent Cloud:  and log in.  If you do not yet have an account, you can create one.

2. Search for and click on “AISD Common Application (Part 1)”.

3. Choose your student and click on the program(s) he/she will apply for.

4. Make note of the remaining pieces of the program’s application process.

5. When you click "Submit", the following components of the application will automatically be forwarded to us.

o General  Student Information
o STAAR scores for 2016-17 in Reading and Math
o Grades for the 1st 2 grading periods of Fall 2017

6. After you click “Submit”, you will see a link for “Teacher Recommendations”.  Click on this link to send the recommendation form to your teachers.

For the Kealing Magnet Program, the remaining application components are:

One essay to be written at home - This can be submitted by sending it to:

Admission Test - see dates below

On-site Essay

If you refer to page 3 of the complete application (attached below), you can use the Required Items list as a checklist. If you complete the online Common Application form and send the Teacher Recommendations through the Cloud, then you will only need to finish items 2 & 7 on the Required Items list.

If you are NOT currently enrolled in AISD, we prefer that you complete the application on paper. The full application is attached at the bottom of this page in PDF format.

Students in grades 5, 6, and 7 are eligible to apply.  Applicants must show proof of residence within AISD boundaries by the application due date.  This proof may include documentation indicating that the student’s family will occupy a residence that has been purchased or leased within 45 calendar days of the application due date.  Residence within AISD boundaries must be maintained in order to remain in the program.  If a student moves out of AISD while attending the program, he/she will be allowed to finish the semester in the program.  The principal or director may request proof of residence at any time.

Our desire is to serve students from every part of Austin ISD.  As a result, we made a few adjustments to our admissions practices in 2017.  Starting with the application process for the 2017-2018 school year, acceptance into the Kealing Magnet Program will be comprised of two halves.  50% of acceptances will be based purely on the top ranking of total rubric scores.  The other 50% of the seats will be proportionally divided by feeder pattern within Austin ISD to students who meet the requisite rubric score. A visual representation can be found if you click on the attachment at the bottom of this page.

In our application, you will find materials that will allow us to assess your qualifications and potential success in our limited enrollment program. All information must be received before your application can be processed and reviewed by a team of teachers. Your application must be completed in full and in our office by 4:30 p.m. on February 2, 2018. Please do not submit additional materials as only the required forms will be evaluated.

Your application will consist of the following components in addition to simple demographic information:

  • 1 essay to be completed at home addressing the prompt below (detailed directions for submission provided in full application)
    • Prompt:  Why is the Kealing Magnet Program the best place to meet your specific academic and personal goals, and how would you contribute to the Kealing community in areas other than academics?
  • Admissions Test and an on-site essay (see dates below for options)
  • 2 Teacher Recommendations (form provided in full application)
  • Students not currently enrolled in Austin ISD will need to submit grades for the Fall of 2017 and Reading and Mathematics STAAR scores from 2016-17.
  • If a student does not have STAAR scores for 2016-17, then he/she will need to provide scores for a nationally-normed standardized test.
  • Students not currently enrolled in Austin ISD schools must provide a lease, deed, or proof of home purchase showing a primary residence within the Austin ISD boundaries.  This proof must be included with the application materials.

The Kealing Magnet Program faculty and I look forward to receiving your completed application. If you or your parents have any questions, please call the Magnet Office at 414-2450. On March 10th we will mail you information about the status of your application to the Magnet Program. Let the adventure begin!

Students applying to the Magnet Program may visit, or ‘shadow’ at Kealing for a day. There will be a limited number of spots for shadowing offered in the month of February that will be filled on a first come first served basis. To visit, students must have submitted the at-home essay portion of their application. Once the essay is submitted, applicants will receive information about how to request a shadowing slot.

Current 5th graders will be paired with a 6th grade student host for the day. Current 6th graders will be paired with a 7th grader, and current 7th graders will be paired with an 8th grader.  Students may ride the Kealing buses. For Magnet Bus Schedules, go to: and click on “Bus Stop Finder Utility”.

When you submit your at-home essay, you will receive a link where you can complete the request to shadow form. Requests will be filled as they are received. In order to maintain our school’s learning atmosphere, we limit the number of visitors on any single day. You will be notified via email or phone of the specific date you are scheduled to shadow.  If you have not been notified of a shadow date by February 16th, please contact the Magnet Office at (512) 414-2450.

The Kealing Magnet Office will give your student a letter verifying the day spent at Kealing, however, you are responsible for making arrangements at your school so that your absence will not be considered unexcused.

PLEASE NOTE:  We noticed a small mistake on page 10 of 10 in the application posted here.  In the STAAR Test chart, it should say "Spring 2017" instead of "Spring 2016".
