Science standards

Next Generation Science Standards

In Appendix F of the NGSS, it states that future science assessments will not assess students’ understanding of core ideas separately from their abilities to use the practices of science and engineering. They will be assessed together, showing students can use their understanding of core concepts to investigate the natural world through science inquiry or solve problems through engineering design.

The term “practices” is used instead of the term “skills” to emphasize that engaging in scientific investigation requires skill and knowledge specific to each practice. (NRC Framework, 2012, pg. 30)

The eight practices of science and engineering align directly to science and engineering fair projects. Students engage in science inquiry, or identify a problem to solve with engineering skills while diving into a specific disciplinary core idea. Their science or engineering project work is the heart of NGSS, a full partnership of practice and content.

The Science and Engineering Practices: 

 1. Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering)

2. Developing and using models

3. Planning and carrying out investigations

4. Analyzing and interpreting data

5. Using mathematics and computational thinking

6. Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering)

7. Engaging in argument from evidence

8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information

Math - Grade 4

1.1       The student uses numerical and computational concepts and procedures in a variety of situations.

Math - Grades 5 - 12

4.1       The student uses concepts and procedures of data analysis in a variety of ways.

4.2       The other math standards covered during any one project depend on the subject of that project.

Writing - Grades 4 - 8

1.2       The student writes expository text using the writing process.
1.3       The student writes technical text using the writing process.

Writing - Grades 9 - 12

1.2       The student writes expository text using the writing process. 

1.3       The student writes technical text using the writing process. 

2.1       The student uses effective research practices. 

2.2       The student uses ethical research practices.

Other standards covered in Health and PE, and Social Science such as Economics may also be covered throughout the course of a project.
