This week will b our first for racket sports. We are going to start with pickleball which consists of small courts, a net, wood paddles, and a whiffle ball. Pickleball is a sport that originated in the Seattle area (Bainbridge Island to be more exact). It's a great game for us at Brookside because the small courts allow us to play multiple games at the same time (we can have 8 doubles games going on at the same time) which means 32 kids playing at once. Pretty awesome to have the room to be able to do that without braving the cold outside.
This week we will work on hitting with our whole body (step with opposition and twist shoulders and hips through hit). We will work on the forehand, backhand, and serve so that when we get into games they will be comfortable making hits. After today we will have a couple days of games (2 on 2) before we move on to another racket sport in badminton.
Pickleball and Badminton are games that have a skill that is assessed at the conclusion of the unit. Here is what each grade level needs to be able to show:
K-Strikes a light weight object
1-Strikes an object upwards
2-Strikes an object with consecutive hits
3-Strikes an object over a net
4-Strikes an object over a net back and forth with partner
