Service Learning

JCS Middle School combines service to the community with student learning in a way to encourage compassion and civic responsibility. This unique learning strategy challenges students to think critically about their local and global community.  Student initiated projects bring enthusiasm to the academic process and encourages skills in communication, teamwork, civic responsibility,  problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and use of technology for research.
PROJECTS WE ARE PROUD OF...               2012 - 2013
Hurricane Sandy Project -
After learning about the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, JCS students wanted to do something to help.  After consulting various organizations, the students chose the Staten Island Giving Circle who were on the scene helping families with food and supplies.  With all the focus on devastation it was important to help this organization focus on their annual Christmas Party for the children in disadvantaged communities.  JCS students committed to knit 50 warm wool winter hats for the  stocking gifts.  The students worked afterschool and during the Thanksgiving holiday on their round looms.  We packaged them up and sent them off to Staten Island on December 7th.

Soles for Souls

Hugs for Heroes

Students collect goodies and create Valentine letters for our soldiers in Afghanistan.  http://www.hugsforheroes.com/

"I just wanted to tell you that I was struck by how much effort and care clearly went into putting these goodie bags together.  The notes in particular were so touching and incredibly sweet, I know how much they will mean to our heroes. We were so touched and impressed by the notes that you guys sent that, before we mailed them out, we took pictures of all of them so we could email them to other units as well.  With your permission, I would like to submit them to Hugs for Heroes Valentine’s Day contest.....Thank you to your wonderful HEROES IN TRAINING for helping us show our troops how much those back home love them and appreciate everything they do for us.
