Exchanges

Wonca Africa is creating a student exchange within Africa, where students can move around and enrich themselves firstly with the African experience. If you are GP, especially with an academic interest, and wish to host a student from 2-8 weeks in your practise then SIGN UP AS HOST. If you are student or up to five years post-qualification and want to see different parts of African primary health care then SIGN UP AS VISITORJoin Afriwon Renaissance!!

HOW TO START?
Visit Programme: The prospective host should draft a visit programme, depending on what is possible and submit to Wonca Africa Exchanges. They should be 2-4 weeks long, and should cover approximately 35 hour per week of exchange related activities. See example in intro doc below. The Visit Programme should offer:
  • The visitor exposure to all areas of the host practice and vice versa.
  • This can include clinical, administrative and managerial work.
  • A programme that takes into consideration the Host’s and the other members of the Hosting practice's learning objectives.
  • An opportunity for the visitor to give a presentation on his/her own primary care system and training structure.
  • An opportunity for the visitor to meet local trainees and where possible attend local teaching sessions.
  • 1-2 hours per week for a tutorial between the visitor and host.
  • All activity should be observational. For legal reasons under no circumstance should the visitor engage in any clinical or administrative work.
WHAT THEN?
The process starts with visitors and hosts checking each other out on the website. Visitors and Hosts can contact each other to set up the visit based on compatible dates / expectations. Go to LIST OF VISITORS / LIST OF HOSTS. All correspondence should be copied to Wonca Africa Exchanges. Agreement must be reached (including Learning Objectives) and contract (to be provided by Wonca Africa Exchanges) signed 16 weeks before exchange dates.

VISIT
The visitor should draft a set of Learning Objectives, based on the Wonca Africa Consensus Statement (attached). This should be submitted to the host and country coordinator and agreed to 16 weeks before the start date. See template below to draft these.

AFTER
There should a final report (based on the learning objectives) submitted to the host and country coordinator as well as Wonca Africa Exchanges (preferably in English) no later than 2 weeks after completion of exchange. Please include photographs and vignettes of experiences. This will be published on the Wonca Africa website. Only those who have done an intra-African exchange and performed satisfactorily will be eligible for an international exchange.

This programme is inspired by the Hippokrates / VdGM efforts in Wonca Europe.
