Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council (NDC), National Football League (NFL) and the Western Dairy Association (WDA).

We promote fueling up on healthy nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, low-fat and fat-free dairy products, and whole grains. We also promote being active for at least 60 minutes a day. We know that eating healthy and staying fit is important and we want to make a little bit easier to do both of them!

This club is intended to promote being healthy at home and at school. At school, every child receives a free nutritious breakfast and a healthy snack. Throughout the school day students participate in brain breaks, which help to increase the ability to learn, remember, and process information. At Swanson, we try to provide brain breaks every 20-40 minutes. Students also participate in a structured recess every day for 20 minutes. Structured recess is intended to give students the opportunity to be up and moving for the entire recess. It also gives students the chance to try different activities that they may not otherwise participate in.

Brain Breaks and Structured recess only give students a total of 30 minutes of physical activity a day so they need to try and be active for at least 30 minutes at home. There are many things children can do to be active at home. Be creative, you can try having everyone do jumping jacks during commercials or plan a family walk around the neighborhood. Anything to get the kids up and moving for another 30 minutes. It doesn't have to be 30 consecutive minutes; do whatever you can to try and fit fitness into your evenings.

Fueling up our bodies with nutrient rich foods will help us have the best school day possible! Our physical activity play is to provide more brain breaks throughout the day. We know that more learning happens when the brain is active and moving about every 20 minutes. We hope that these two plays will make a difference in our school!
