Organizational Overview

Jefferson County Outdoor Lab Schools give 6th grade students the unique opportunity to explore subjects such as earth science, life science, water systems, archery, and astronomy. Experientially, students are engaged in problem solving, team building, decision-making and social interaction. Jefferson County operates the program from two sites; Windy Peak is located just south of Bailey, Colorado and Mount Evans is located west of Evergreen, Colorado.

Position Overview

The Instructional Intern will teach trail classes in one or more subjects: Biosphere, Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Navigation, Archery, Low Ropes Initiatives, History, and Astronomy. The instructional intern will model best practices with teachers while mentoring high school leaders and interns, living on site Monday through Friday. 

Essential Job Functions

                Mentor high school interns in leadership and outdoor education methodology

  Work closely with the Program Director

  Instruct and develop Jefferson County 6th grade outdoor education classes

  Manage projects to develop the program and site stewardship

  Solve problems as they arise

  Supervise and mentor 6th grade students and high school leaders in the bunkhouse

            Interact with people of diverse backgrounds and different levels of experience

Duty Division:

   40% Instruction

   20% Bunkhouse mentoring and supervision

   20% Mentoring interns

   10% Program/curriculum development

   10% Other duties as assigned

Desired Job Functions

   Experience with  curriculum and instruction

   Outdoor/leadership experience

Hours: +40 Monday through Thursday (Friday Optional)

Housing:  Living on-site is required - rustic cabins or dorm lock-off rooms are provided. Accommodations may be shared with other interns. Three meals a day will be provided during the week.


   Bachelor’s degree or working towards bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Education, Environmental Science, Hospitality and Recreation, Interpretation  or related fields.

   Certification in First Aid and CPR (available upon hire). Must also successfully pass a criminal background check.
