Science

Unit 1: Parts and Wholes - Mixtures
  • Students explore various ways to separate a mixture using its properties
  • Students will also explore the concept of conservation of mass - the mass of the parts after they are separated compared to the mass of the whole before the mixture is separated
  • Key Vocabulary: matter, mixture, components, weight, mass, liquid, solid, gas

Unit 2: Systems - Weather
  • Students learn the components which make up a weather system (temperature, precipitation, humidity, air pressure, and wind)
  • Students will also learn how weather forecasters use those components to predict the weather
  • Key Vocabulary: air pressure, transfer, heat, energy, seasons, temperature, precipitation, humidity, weather
Unit 3: Systems - Earth
  • Students explore the processes that shape the surface of the earth.  This unit sets up deeper understanding of all of the processes that shape Earth when studied in sixth grade
  • Students can identify evidence of surface changes in our world.
  • Analyze and interpret a variety of data to understand the origin, utilization, and concerns associated with natural resources.
  • Construct and present scientifically accurate explanations about natural resources justified with adequate and reasonable evidence.
  • Evaluate the positive and negative impacts of accessing nonrenewable energy sources with regard to land, transportation, and communities.
  • Provide feedback to peers about scientific accuracy and use of evidence to support claims.
Unit 4: Systems - Organisms
  • Compare the organs and structures of a variety of plants and animals, and explain why those structures are required for their survival.
  • Create a model that represents the parts/systems of plants and animals and why those parts are important for survival
  • Develop an explanation and justify the role of various organs or structures that are important for plant and animal survival. e.g the heart of a human and the leaves of a plant
  • Key vocabulary: organs, structures, organism, survival, plant animal, models, functions
Unit 5: Systems -Human Body Systems

  • Compare and contrast a human body system to that of another organism e.g. humans to rat, humans to frogs, humans to butterflies.  Explain why they are similar or different.
  • Create a hypothesis about why similarities exist between humans and other animals
  • Create a model of a human body system’s organs and define their function.
  • Develop an evidence based explanation regarding how humans address their basic survival needs
  • Use data to justify how the human body systems are interdependent e.g. circulatory – respiratory systems, digestive – circulatory systems, circulatory – urinary systems.
  • We are going to be conducting 3 week research projects about the human body that have students communicate how all systems are interdependent and how systems are impacted with health "issues".
