The purpose of Family and Consumer Sciences is to prepare students with critical life skills that focus on family and career development by:

~Strengthening the well-being of individuals and families across the life span

~Becoming responsible citizens and leaders in family, community and work settings

~Promoting optimal nutrition and wellness across the life span

~Balancing personal, home, family and work lives

~Using critical and creative thinking skills to address problems in diverse family, community and work environments

~Successful life management, employment and career development

~Functioning effectively as providers and consumers of goods and services

At Columbine, we offer the following classes in FACS Education:

~ Culinary Nutrition - 1 semester - 9 - 12 grade - Understand the basics of cooking and proper nutrition for life.

~ ProStart - Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management  - Year long Class - 10 - 12 Grade It is recommended that students take Culinary Nutrition prior to ProStart.  Students may receive 3 college credits from Metro and an industry certification from completing this course.

~ Child Development - 1 Semester - 9 - 12 Grade - How children develop from conception to adolescence

~ Life Management - 1 Semester - 11 - 12 Grade - How to manage your life effectively after high school, to  be a successful adult by understanding finances, housing, transportation, and how to acquire a job.                                 

 ~ Teen Choices - 1 Semester - 9 - 10 Grade - A class designed to help students  make smart decisions for themselves throughout high school. Students receive a Health/PE credit through this class.

~ Education Exploration - 1 Semester - 11 - 12 Grade - Students spend time at an elementary school in a classroom helping students and receive class information about teaching as a career option.  Students must have their own reliable transportation.
