Mrs. Hoy's News

Hello October!
We are midway through the first trimester and the students have settled into the routines of school. With the beginning of October, this is a reminder that we are entering into that time of year when the weather can change quickly.  Please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing for the fall mountain weather.
Super Hero Sprint Rewards are coming up for our students.  The Jamba Juice treats will be enjoyed this week and plans are set for the Fall carnival.  This will take place for 5th grade on Tuesday, October 31st, from 2:45-3:30.
Halloween is always a special day and our party planning committee is busy planning a fun time for the class.  This year, the 5th grade parties will take place in the morning, before recess and lunch, so that Mrs. Grawe's students can enjoy the festivities  with their homeroom teacher.  The party will begin at 11:15 and run until the students go outside for recess.  WJES' traditional all-school parade will begin at 2:15 followed by our time in the gym for the Fall carnival.  Please join us for any or all of the day's activities.
On Friday mornings, the 5th grade classes are engaged in one of three clubs, a technology club, an environmental club, or math club.  Some of the activities going on during this time are students learning the basics of computer coding, students leading a district sponsored  energy savings contest, researching and planning improvements for our school garden and outdoor learning space, and extending their thinking through math activities.  The kids have responded positively to this choice time and are engaged in areas of interest.  This time also includes a homework club to give students who are behind in school work a chance to get their work completed.
Please make note that our next early release day scheduled for Friday, November 3rd is now a full non-student contact day.  Students will enjoy a three day weekend, giving teachers a full day to look at student data and plan for upcoming units.  All future early release days will now be non school days for students and planning days for teachers.
If you need to reach me during the school day, please either send me an email at or leave a message with the office.  I will return your calls promptly.

Members of the Strawbs Garden Team went on a tour of three school gardens.    They were gathering ideas to put into place in our school garden area.  They visited the ACRES program at Warren Tech High School, Peiffer Elementary's garden, and Wilmot's community garden.

Members of the Light Busters Energy Team recently took
a field trip to the Solar Decathlon,
a college sustainability competition.
