IDEA, Institute for Democratic Education in America, is an emerging national nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure that all young people can participate meaningfully in their education and gain the tools to build a just, democratic, and sustainable world.

Our School is greatly inspired by the popular education movement. Paulo Freire, exponent of this postulate, is influenced by historical education and social transformation philosophers,including Socrates and the great thinkers from Ancient Greece. This has led our organization to adopt the Socratic dialogue as part of our methodology.

For over twenty years, the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) has been at the forefront of creating and sustaining personalized, equitable, and intellectually challenging schools. Essential schools are places of powerful student learning where all students have the chance to reach their fullest potential.

Fredric “Rick” Posner, Ph.D. has a background in open, democratic , alternative schools as well as special education. His dissertation (1989) was entitled A Study of Self-Directed Learning, Perceived Competence, and Personal Orientation Among Students in an Open, Alternative High School.

Rick Posner is a retired Open School Advisor and author of, Lives of Passion, School of Hope: How one public school ignites a lifelong love of learning.

This site supports teaching self-directed learning (SDL) and becoming a self-directed person. It supports home-schooling, experiential education, open schooling and life-long learning. Keeping a journal, setting goals, planning and taking action are key tools. Self-improvement, personal development and the development of character are central themes of SDL.
Maurice Gibbons is the author of, "Walkabout, Searching for the Right Passage from Childhood and School" (PDK, May 74) which inspired Opens School’s, Walkabout Program.

The LANGBERG FOUNDATION was created to focus resources, both human and financial, on critical opportunities for educational innovation and change.
