About Us

Ms. Mandi Leigh - Science

Ms. Leigh is thrilled to be spending time at Bell Middle doing science!

A little about me and my experience: I have been practicing science since I was born.  Yes, I have been a nerd that long.  I will "geek out" without warning at insects, birds, trees, stones, weather events, and odd human behavior.  Professionally, I have been involved in wildlife ecology for 10 years.  I have studied song birds throughout Colorado, aquatic invertebrates from the high alpine to low elevation, endangered butterflies in the mountains, Gunnison Sage Grouse, prairie dogs, the enigmatic ptarmigan, forest health in Kelly, WY, and the magical interactions that are occurring right now in my backyard garden.

This will be my 4th year in a middle school classroom. Teaching is relatively new to my quiver of skills, but I have been teaching throughout my life in the pool, on the rivers, on the slopes, and behind the wheel of a snowcat. I completed my undergraduate work at Western State Colorado University where I studied Ecology and Environmental Biology.  I have a Masters degree in Natural Science Education from University of Wyoming.  My teaching mantra is to include all students, everyday.  Science is absolutely the best subject in school, I am thrilled to share this energy with my students.

Mr. Jayson Haberkorn - U.S. History

I am a native of Jeffco in my 20th year of teaching.  Having spent 15 of my years in the classroom at the elementary level, this is now my fifth year at Bell Middle School and my second working with 8th graders.

While I have M.A. in Interdisciplinary Instruction from the University of Colorado, my passion is Social Studies, American History, and Civics.

I love to travel and I've vacationed in all 50 states.  In 2006, I ran as a dark horse candidate for State Representative and ended up losing the race by only six percentage points.  Nevertheless, the experience was incredible and the loss was a blessing in disguise, as it reassured me that the classroom is the place where I can have the greatest impact on my community and the future of our country.

I look forward to working with you in challenging your child's thinking  as he or she learns about our nation's history, government, and culture.  Controversial topics will be no stranger to our classroom, but respectful, informed debate will a norm as your child learns to become a thoughtful, creative, and influential community leader of tomorrow.

Mr. Jon McVey - English Language Arts
Also a Jeffco native, I was  born, raised, educated, and educate in Jeffco! Even my wife and two kids all attended Jeffco schools. This will be my 16th year in the district and I couldn't be happier to be a part of the Bell family.  I have a BA in Broadcasting from Colorado State University (Go Rams!) and an ME.d in education from Regis University. My first career was that of a television Producer/Director/Writer for numerous broadcast and cable outlets. I like to bring this experience into my classroom as I help my students communicate effectively and solve problems creatively.

To promote life-long readers, I expect my students to be reading a book (of their choice) outside my classroom about every three to four weeks. As you know by now, students at this age like to argue-awesome! I have taught and coached high schools debate teams, so we will be working on how to use reason and evidence throughout the year to build a solid case-sorry parents :)

Ms. Jessica Klauzer-Zimmerman - Engineering

My Teaching Philosophy:
Students need a safe and inspiring place to explore their own ideas. My ultimate learning goal for students is that they learn to define their own path in education. In my classes, students identify and clarify their inner motivations and will put their knowledge of technology and Engineering concepts to work in creative ways to illuminate their unique voice and to solve real-world problems that make a tangible impact on society.

The 2017/18 school year will be my 5th year teaching in public schools and my 10th year in education. This will be my first year in Jeffco schools, having emigrated from Boulder Valley School District over the summer. I hold a Master's Degree in Integrated Education from Regis University and a BFA in Ceramics and Digital Media from CU Boulder. I am an avid tinkerer and love to have my hands in electronics, woodshop projects, mechanical contraptions and practical problem solving. Prior to entering the public education realm, I instructed private courses in web development, ceramics, and traditional bookbinding.

I am very excited to be a part of the unique Bell Middle School iSTEM team and to help your children reach for their own goals this year in Engineering!
