Does Environmental Equity Help Close the Achievement Gap?

Here's the major findings: "We find that the presence of a school garden is associated with higher test scores and persists even when controlling for the race and class composition of students for reading and science. We conclude by discussing how school gardens can be used as a policy tool to create more environmental equity in urban areas."
The study's findings are supportive of other's work around the concepts that school - based gardens can:
  • serve as opportunities for community - based learning;
  • provide informal, experiential learning environments that expose children to the fields of STEM education and careers;
  • stimulate an appreciation for the garden as non-judgmental teacher, allowing a connection to curriculum and retention of ideas (learning by doing); and
  • allow children to explore, investigate, see commonalities among others as essential to the learning process.
