Maintain a writer’s notebook as a tool to collect, explore, and expand on ideas for writing

Use feedback to revise and set goals

With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing. (The use of technology and student publishing can be achieved across content areas and at anytime during this trimester.

Creating a Culture of Writers

Students will understand that...

• Writers create interest in their stories with a well-crafted, intriguing lead.

• Writers engage their readers by focusing on a small episode or event

(slice of life) and zoom in on the most important parts of the story.

Students will be able to...

• Write Slice of Life narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or

event using a sequence that unfolds naturally

• Apply knowledge of the critical attributes of personal narrative “Slice of

Life” writing, through reading and listening to mentor text, specifically:

• Establish in the lead a situation and introduces the narrator and/or

characters (critical attribute focus)

• Write focused on a small episode or event (critical attribute focus)

• Use transitional words and phrases to manage the sequence of events

(critical attribute focus)

• Order words and phrases including verbs and adjectives in sentences to convey ideas precisely
