Becoming a PTO
The results of the membership vote in March were in favor of dissolving our CO PTA membership and reforming as a PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) at Drake.  We are now very busy 1) removing PTSA from all of our communications, websites, bulletin boards, etc. (per CO PTA's request), 2) drafting bylaws which will need to be approved and sent to the secretary of state, 3) applying for non-profit status, 4) preparing to purchase new insurance in the fall, and 5) taking care of taxes and changing bank accounts.  We will be set up and ready to go for our membership drive in the Fall!

Drake PTO is proud to announce that we will be partnering with Integrity Fundraising, a local Colorado Company, to bring BUTTER BRAIDS to you this Fall! You won't want to miss out on trying one of these delicious pastries if you haven't already. They make great desserts for the upcoming holidays or any day! The best part is that Drake PTO keeps 40% of each butter braid sold. Also included in the order form are Yumbana Gluten Free products and local Colorado Roaster Coda Coffee.

Watch for information and order forms to come home October 17th when the sale kicks off. We'll be accepting orders until October 31st and butter braid pick up will be on November 7th...in plenty of time for the holidays!

We look forward to a successful sale with your support!

Play Area Moving Forward

Drake PTO continues to play a major role in the development, planning, and installation of a playground at Drake. As mentioned last month, due to budget cuts from the district, the planned playground area was cut from the new build.  Our PTO felt that took urgent priority and voted for a majority of our funds this year go to ensure the completion of the play area.  A committee with some great experience in this arena has formed and met with the construction heads and administration to begin research and planning.  After looking at options, they are looking toward fitness/obstacle course type equipment as well as tables and seating to be added.  Plans are currently being drawn up, and they hope that within the next couple of weeks to be able to present a few different options to students and staff for feedback.  Once decisions have been made, they can send out for bids from various companies. While time is tight, we are relatively hopeful that the area will be completed in time for the first day of school in August. That is certainly the goal!

WEB Program Coming to Drake

Staff members approached the PTO at our March Meeting and asked for support for a new program that will kick off in the Fall.  The WEB program (short for "Where Everybody Belongs") is a nation wide middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes 6th/7th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, the program trains mentors selected from the 8th grade class to be WEB Leaders.  As positive role models, WEB Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the 6th/7th graders to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to middle school and help facilitate their success.

WEB provides the structure for 6th/7th graders to receive both academic and social support and guidance from 8th graders who have been through the challenges that middle school poses.  The program also acts as an anti-bullying program for the school by providing it with a cadre of student leaders who look for bullying behavior and help stop it.

Overseen by a core group of staff who already attended training days this Spring, the 8th grade students will receive their training over a couple of days in the summer and will be ready to go on the first day of attendance by the 6th/7th grades.  The PTO Board is very excited about the possibilities of this program and are committed to supporting its success.
