Synopsis:   In this story within a story, during a hurricane a little girl is afraid and the adults around her try to calm her by telling her the story of Ti Moune. Ti Moune was orphaned in a hurricane just like this one and was rescued from a tree by two old peasants. She always thought she was saved by the gods for something extraordinary.  The gods -- Earth, Water, Love and Death,  take notice and among themselves, devise a contest, using Ti Moune,  to see who is strongest among them. When a car crashes and a boy from the  wealthy French side of the island is hurt, she nurses  his wounds and later sets out to be with him, convinced that her fate is to marry him.
