Welcome to 1st Grade!
Greetings From Mrs. Young

I am so excited to be teaching for my fourth year at Mt. Carbon.  The parents, fellow educators, and students make this school an absolute joy for me to come to everyday.  Previously, I taught first grade for two years in Nashville, Tennessee.  I earned a Bachelors in Psychology and Sociology from CU and a Masters in Teaching from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee.

I am married and have two children and a dog.  I am a Colorado native, but have also been fortunate to live in Austin, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee.  I enjoy hiking, biking, and being with my large extended family.

As readers, we are working to be the boss of our reading. We are setting goals for our reading and are using all the tools we have to help us become stronger readers. We are working on skills that help us solve hard words, increase our reading fluency, and understand what we read.

Unit 6 is our new unit that focuses on data and comparison. We will focus on organizing data and asking and answering questions based on data. We will also focus on comparison story problems and we will use a new model to help us solve the problems.

Our focus is on small moment writing. We are choosing little moments that we can stretch out to include details so that our readers enjoy our stories. We are continuing to use mentor texts (other books) to help us get ideas to improve our writing.

Social Studies
In Social Studies we will be focusing on economics. We will learn how to set financial goals and to plan ways to meet those goals. We will also learn about how people spend the money they earn on different goods and services.

We will have snack time every day.  Please feel free to send one nutritious snack in your students' backpack.  Students can have water in the classroom.  Other beverages will need to be saved for lunch.   Snack time is brief and may be eaten during other activities, so please also keep it simple and easy to clean up.

Please do not send birthday treats or snacks to school!
