Cross Country!

Check out the Announcements Tab for Important Information

Hello cross country runners!  We just found out from CHSAA that the Governor's office has approved cross country to be the only fall sport that wasn't previously approved (the others were softball, golf, and tennis).  The rest of the fall sports will be held later in the year - starting in January. Once CHSAA gives us the cross country bulletin, we will know exactly how cross country will work this season.  Once we have final details and have a chance to digest them, we will send out the details to all of you.

This is what we know right now:

  • Official practice starts Wednesday, August 12.
  • We are allowed a maximum of 7 meets - the schedule is posted on our website, but we don't know if any of those meets will be allowed to be held.  We might have to have smaller meets that we host with other schools.  A typical invitational has more than 1,000 runners plus coaches, spectators, and volunteers.  Right now, in the State of Colorado, only 175 people are allowed to be at a venue for an event, unless they receive a waiver from the health departments involved.
  • The State meet is tentatively scheduled for October 17, shortening our season by 2 weeks.  At this point, we don't know if the 7 meet maximum includes League, Region, and State.
  • In order to be at practice starting on August 12, you MUST have completed all registration requirements, and have a current physical.
  • Unless we have to limit the team size, we will be splitting the team into 2 groups meeting at 2 different locations at school for practice.  This is because if someone on the team gets COVID-19, that group will probably end up getting quarantined for 2 weeks and will not be allowed to practice or compete.
  • Coach Moore's Group will still meet in the mornings at 7:00 a.m. at our present location for at least next week (and probably the week after).
  • Coach Maren and Coach Guy's Group, which will be everyone else, will meet in the afternoons starting August 12, at 3:30 p.m.  Location TBD.
  • Once online school begins on August 24, all runners will have afternoon practice at 3:30 p.m., but we'll meet in at least 2 different locations at school (TBD).

This is what we don't know:

  • Do we still have to have an in-person parent meeting?
  • Do we have to limit the size of the team?
  • A bunch of other things we haven't thought of yet, as we are still processing the situation
  • How transportation to meets will be handled.

Registration

All athletes need to register Online prior to August 12.  Per CHSAA rules, athletes may not attend practice until all registration requirements are complete.  This includes your physical.

Physical

In order to compete in Cross Country, you must have a current physical. You need a note from your doctor stating that you had a physical and can participate in a sport.  Your physical is valid for one year from the date it is signed by your physician.  Please follow the directions during registration regarding submission of your physical.  There is also a new COVID-19 form that should be filled out by your doctor.  This is located on the Arvada West Athletics website.  If you already had a physical done over the summer and did not have this COVID-19 form filled out by your doctor, that is ok.  No need to go back and have it filled out.

If interested, see information below regarding $20 physicals at CareNow:

It’s around that time to start preparing for sports physicals again! CareNow wants to help prepare for the summer and fall sports seasons by offering discounted sports physicals to the community at only $20 from now until August 31. We are focused on ensuring a safe environment for our community by taking measures to keep families safe. Our clinical teams are highly trained in clinical protocols in accordance with CDC guidelines to ensure the safety of all patients.

Important things to know before a sports physical visit:

  • Students should bring all necessary forms with them.

  • All students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian if they are under the age of 18.

  • Glasses or contacts must be brought in for sports physical.

  • There will be a $6 charge for any additional forms (i.e. summer camp).

  • Price is good for students grades K-12

Take advantage of this promotional offer before the back to school rush in August! Visit Carenow.com/Denver to find a location that is open near you.

Athletic Fee

The athletic fee of $175 will post to your account for payment sometime after rosters have been completed – be patient. This could be the second or third week of practice.

Sunday Contact

Per CHSAA rules, coaches are not allowed to communicate about cross country with students or parents on Sundays.  Any emails received on Sunday will be replied to the following morning.  Also, per CHSAA rules, only athletes and coaches may attend practice.

Again, we will send out an email with specific details about practice, meets, etc. later this week or over the weekend.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Go Wildcats!

Coach and Della

  • Just a reminder - practice is mandatory.
  • Practice begins after school at 3:30p.m.  Location TBD.  Attendance is taken daily.
  • Practice usually ends around 4:45 p.m., but can go later, depending on the workout.
  • You may only be excused from practice for reasons that you would be excused from school (i.e., school event, school work, ACT test, sickness, death in family, etc.).
  • This year's season will be 2 weeks shorter than normal, please schedule doctor appointments, dentist appointments, and work around practice times.
  • If you are not going to be at practice for any reason, you must notify Coach Moore at della.moore@jeffco.k12.co.us or 303-547-0157.  Do NOT simply notify a teammate.
  • Per CHSAA rules, athletes may not compete in a scrimmage or meet until they have participated in 3 practices.
