  • Fall 2020 Announcements and Information
    Hello parents and players,
First and foremost, I hope everyone is doing well and all of your families have been safe and healthy over the summer!  I know these last few months have been stressful and uncertain for a lot of people.  There are a lot of different feelings about what should be happening and what's going to happen with the reopening of schools and athletics.  I'm the same way.  I've been at school for a week now and still have questions about how it's going to be.  I still have questions about what we can and can't do with baseball this fall and moving into the spring.  I can tell you that I am happy to be back in school and am looking forward to seeing players again!!

A few things to address.  I know there was a rumor going around that I had resigned/retired and was not going to coach at A-West.  I don't know why or how that started, but it is absolutely not true.  I am still planning on being the head baseball coach here.  I have been around Arvada West for approximately 30 years both as a student, coach and teacher in that time.  I truly enjoy being here and coaching baseball.  I believe Arvada West is a great school and we have great kids and teachers within the school that are great to work with everyday.

There have been some changes handed down from CHSAA that we are going to have to adjust to.  Our spring season has been pushed back and will begin on April 26.  The schedule has been reduced from 23 games to 16 games and the regular season must be completed by June 8.  The final State Championship game will be June 26.  This pushes the spring season into the summer.  By doing that, it can cause some conflicts with other organizations that want to play during the summer as well, some might start in May, or even offer a spring league.   Having to choose where to play can put some stress on players and parents.  The thing I would ask is to take some time to think about the decision.  I know we only have 16 games this season, but for some it might be the last time to play for, and represent, their high school.  It might be the last time they get to play with their high school friends.  For me, there is more to baseball than just playing game after game after game.  I was fortunate to make some really good friends while playing high school baseball and have made some really good friends through coaching as well.

We will have fall baseball!!  As of right now, we have scheduled 11 games for an 18U team and a 15U team.  If we have enough players that are interested in playing fall baseball with us, it will be pretty simple to get the same games for a 16U team as well.  I am also waiting to hear from a few schools to add some more games.  We are also trying to schedule a tournament to wrap up the fall.  I would like to get each team around 20-22 games if possible.  We are also setting up a fall workout with Matt Jones at One6Performance.  Coach Whitehead has worked on pricing and times for the players to go to his facility and work with him in 2 hour sessions.  One hour would be a workout and the other hour would be skills (hitting/pitching/catching/etc.)   The cost for the workouts would be $200 for 8 2-hour sessions and the players would be able to go online and schedule when they could go between 11:00 and 6:00.  We are going to run the workouts through One6Performance because we can not have any indoor activities until at least October 16 per CHSAA rules.  Which means we can't use the weight room.   I am waiting to finalize the fall game schedule before setting a price, but it will be as low as I can make it and still pay for field use (yes we will have to rent out our own field), umpires and insurance.

Finally, I have attached a quick google form.  If you could take a minute to fill it out so I can get names, grade and a count on how many players we might have.

  • Spirit Pack - KSG website link
Here is the link for the required spirit pack.  When you order, make sure you select "Coach Delivery"!!!  There are two payment options.  The first is if you want to pay the $125 and place the order.  The second option is if you want to use the fundraiser to supplement the $125.  There is a $5 fee to place the original order.  For each card sold, $10 goes towards the spirit pack.  The total cost is still $125 (sell 12 cards and spirit pack is covered).  The last day to order the spirit pack is Friday at Midnight.  If you are unsure about cuts and making a team, you may wait until those are done and then place the order.  Again, the last day to order is Midnight on Friday!!

    Thanks,
    Coach McDougal
