Science Safety Guidelines—Bell Middle School

**If you need a copy of the Safety Contract( to sign and return to school so you can participate in labs) please download the attachment below.

You can best learn science by “doing science”.  This means doing laboratory experiments, activities, and other tasks that involve moving about the classroom and using materials other than pencils and paper.  Use of some of these materials involves a degree of risk.  Your safety and that of the others working around you depends on your behavior.  Read these rules and follow them at all times.  Our goal is to have a safe, accident-free classroom.

Personal Safety

1.      Know the location and use of safety equipment (eyewash, blanket, fire extinguisher).

2.      Treat every chemical with respect.  Chemicals can enter the body through the mouth, skin, and lungs, therefore, do not touch, smell or taste chemicals unless instructed by your teacher to do so.

3.      When working with flames or chemicals:

·         Remove or tie back dangling objects (such as jewelry, long sleeves, or loose clothing) that could catch on things.

·         Tie back long hair.

·         Do not bring coats or jackets to class.

4.      Remain at your assigned workstation.

5.      Never bring food, gum or drinks into the laboratory.

Lab Safety

1.      Correctly wear eye protection whenever the teacher says it is necessary.

2.      Only do experiments approved by your teacher.

3.      Correctly store or dispose of extra and used materials.

4.      Quickly clean up any spills.  If you are unsure if the spill is harmless or not, immediately tell the teacher.  If you spill anything on your hands, thoroughly wash them immediately.

5.      Do not heat or burn anything with the burner except as directed by the teacher.

6.      Use the scalpel with teacher direction and extreme care.

Equipment Safety

1.      Do not “tease” others with lab equipment.

2.      Handle the burners carefully.  Report any burner problems to the teacher immediately.

3.      Immediately report all accidents to the teacher.  This includes all glass breakage.

4.      Always be careful when handling glass. Hot glass looks the same as cold glass.

5.      Never move or turn glass tubing or thermometers in rubber stoppers.  Get help from your teacher whenever adjustments are needed.

6.      Do not stir mixtures with a thermometer.

7.      Keep sinks, counter tops and desktops clean.

8.      At the end of the day’s lab work, clean off your desktop, properly dispose of waste, and return equipment and supplies to their proper place in good condition.
