Fall 2016 - Spring 2017

General Art 7 & 8; Visions Art 8

This is the home page for the Visual Arts Program at Smithfield Middle School, in Smithfield, Virginia.

For the 2016 - 2017 school year, this class will be taught by Mr. K. Segner, M.A., Ed.S.  This is Mr. Segner's fourth year at SMS and 17th year teaching in Isle of Wight County!  Currently, the Visual Arts program consists of 7th Grade General Art, 8th Grade General Art, and 8th Grade Visions.  Smithfield Middle School currently runs on an A/B day schedule, so student enrolled in Art or other Exploratory classes will receive instruction in that class every other day.  As much as it is possible, lessons will be structured around a 5-day schedule to ensure that each student has equal amount of time to complete each unit within a two-week period.  Our emphasis this year will be on AESTHETICS - understanding what makes objects visually appealing to the artist creating the work and the people view the work.

Isle of Wight County Schools offers the Power School portal for parents to be able to view their student's progress 24 hours a day, via the internet.  Each student will be given a code at the beginning of the year to enable family members to log in to a Power School site specifically for their student.  Since creating art is often a matter of following a certain process correctly, students grades often reflect the ability to plan and follow directions.

About Me

Mr. Segner has been employed as an art instructor and visual artist for over 30 years.  He holds degrees from Virginia Tech, Norfolk State and George Washington University and is currently endorsed in Visual Arts and Gifted Education.  In addition to teaching, Mr. Segner has been employed in the defense, banking, fashion and health care industries.  He and his wife, Alisa (also a teacher) reside in Smithfield and have four children - all of whom have graduated from Smithfield Middle School themselves.  In addition to a love of the arts, Mr. Segner plays guitar, mandolin and banjo and will be sponsoring a chapter of the National Junior Art Honor Society, the Guitar Club and other activities.

About YOU!

Quite simply, there are very few disciplines that affect more of our personal lives as much as art.  From the clothes you picked out this morning (based on colors?  textures?) to the appearance of the food you had for breakfast (culinary ARTS), a some point an artist had a hand in that decision.  By participating in the visual arts program, you will have a lot fun creating new and original artworks that reflect your personality - likes and dislikes.  You will also see how visual arts affects business, fashion, marketing, even government!  You will also acquire an understanding of the importance of art and artists throughout history and soon be able to answer questions like . . "why would the family that paid $254 million dollars for a painting in 2011, pay close to $300 million for another painting in the year 2015?"
