July is National Ice Cream Month, a recognition created in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, dairy foods companies in the United States employ over 975,000 skilled individuals, generate more than $39 billion in direct wages and have an overall economic impact of more than $200 billion.

Ohio ranks 4th in the U.S. for the production of hard ice cream.

The science of ice cream makes for interesting stories. You can find out more about why ice cream melts the way it does by way of National Public Radio’s Science Friday show: https://uwmadscience.news.wisc.edu/curiosities/i-scream-you-scream-we-all-scream-for-ice-cream-and-science/ There are also health-related stories about ice cream. The Ohio Department of Agriculture is responsible for monitoring the health and safety of dairy products in Ohio, and you can learn more about how they do it by visiting the Division of Dairy.
