4.  Select the old entry (either 25734@mosfet.isu.edu or 25734@134.50.46.234)

5.  Click Remove button

6. Click 'Add'

7.  Enter '25734@ghost.cose.isu.edu'

8.  CLick OK and close.

Important Linux and Mac software vulnerabilities, if you are managing your own MacOS or Linux system, please read.

posted Mar 6, 2014, 5:29 PM by Benjamin Nickell

A recent major vulnerability to security has been discovered on all Linux distributions. (source: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2014/030414-linux-security-279392.html?source=NWWNLE_nlt_security_2014-03-05)

The University has mandated that all Linux distributions on the ISU network are to be patched with the update addressing this vulnerability no later than Friday, March 21.

Ensuring that your Linux distribution is up to date with patches should be sufficient to ensure compliance with this directive.

In CoSE, we use primarily Ubuntu Linux, for other Linux vendors, check with us our your vendor.
The Ubuntu releases currently supported are:

10.04
12.04
12.10  (support ends in April)
13.10

If you are running one of these releases, make sure you are fully updated.

Here is the Ubuntu security notice.
http://www.ubuntu.com/usn/usn-2127-1/

If you operate a Linux distribution machine and you are unsure how to accomplish this task, please let us know ASAP so that we may assist you.

There was a similar bug in MacOS and IOS devices recently, and to be protected you'll need to update to the latest OS and install all available updates for you device. In this case, Apple has backported the fix to 10.7 and 10.8, but there are other vulnerabilities left unpatched.  Apple hasn't issued a clear statement on security updates for older versions of MacOS since Mavericks (10.9) is now available at no cost.

If you are a current Banner or Argos User on Windows please follow the additional steps below.

1. Open the Java Control Panel by going to the Windows Icon in the bottom left of your screen,

2. select “All Programs”,

3. Choose Java,

4. Select Configure Java

5. Click on Security tab and then

6. select “Edit Site List”

a.      Add the address for Banner (http://inb.isu.edu:9001)

b.     and Argos (https://aim.isos.isu.edu/argos/)  Then hit OK.

You should now be able to close your browser and then go back into your browser and try accessing Banner or Argos.

First day of school DHCP outages

posted Aug 26, 2013, 5:46 PM by Benjamin Nickell

Well, it wouldn't be the first day of school without some craziness.  As you may know, CoSE transitioned over to campus provided DHCP servers this summer, and they had many hiccups today.  NeTel was working hard on this, and think they may have figured out the problem and were implementing  a solution.  I apologize to those who had intermittent or no network access today and hope things go much smoother tomorrow.

Current on ongoing network changes in the PS and PSC buildings

posted Jun 17, 2013, 10:40 AM by Benjamin Nickell

As I communicated to most of you in an earlier email, we are in the midst of a large, complex network change in the physical sciences building.

We have been working hard for several months to ensure a smooth transition during this change, however, we can not anticipate all the possible impacts and because of this some things are going to break.

We have already started moving equipment for this change, and changes will continue until our building wide outage on Thursday, June 20th from 4pm until 6am Friday, June 21st. Please test services after this maintenance window.

Please be patient with us as we are juggling many projects and priorities.  You can help by testing your important services and reporting any issues you observe to the appropriate email address for your department found at http://help.cose.isu.edu/it-support

If you have specific high priority questions and concerns, please give us a call or create a ticket as described above.

Thanks,

Ben Nickell

Engineering Matlab License server moved (changes required)

posted May 15, 2013, 11:04 AM by Benjamin Nickell   [ updated May 15, 2013, 11:16 AM ]

You'll need to update your license file to the new server location.  To do this you'll need to find your current Matlab license file directory.
The file will be named network.lic or license.dat

Matlab license file locations
( in all cases replace R2013a with your installed version)

    WIndows XP or Windows 7
        32bit     c:\Program FIles\Mathlab\R2013a\licenses
        64bit      c:\Program FIles\Mathlab\R2013a\licenses    or  c:\Program FIles (x86)\Mathlab\R2013a\licenses

    MacOSX
/Applications/MATLAB_2013a/licenses/    (may have to use show package contents or the terminal)

More info on locations:

You can update your license file in one of two ways:
  •  1) or replacing the license file with the attached file.
    • remove any existing license.dat files
    • Put the network.lic file attached below in the same directory
    • save and restart Matlab
  •  2)  find and update your current license file with the new server line using a text editor.
      • Remove old server lines and include the following text,
                         SERVER lic1.cose.isu.edu 52540094e3e8 27000
                USE_SERVER
      • save and restart Matlab

Please email engrhelp@isu.edu  or call x5162 if you need help.

Minerve cluster outage, May 15th at noon.

posted May 13, 2013, 3:19 PM by Benjamin Nickell   [ updated May 13, 2013, 3:19 PM ]

On Wednesday May 15th, at approximately 12pm the water will be shut off on lower campus which will necessitate shutting down the cooling system in the cluster room.  We will monitor the temperature and will likely shut down some or all of minerve's nodes as temperature dictates.

You can help by finishing or suspending your jobs before 12pm on 5/15.

In other news, http://ganglia.cose.isu.edu is now working.
