Our Grade 5 Classroom Without Walls program is focused on team building and service. Students will have many opportunities to work together during these two days and develop their collaboration and teamwork skills through a variety of games and activities.

On October 6th students begin their CWW experience with an Amazing Race activity from 7:30 - 10:30 am that is organized by Amanda Pekin. We are in need of parents to help sign up to run the various stations around the campus. It is a lot of fun and not a lot of work. If you haven't had a chance to sign up yet please sign up here. There will be a brief introduction meeting on September 20 from 9:10 - 9:30 am in the LT. If you can't make it, don't worry, just email Amanda, myself, or the PCA Liaisons.

On October 7th we will be welcoming Grade 4 and Grade 5 Papaya Academy students to work with our students. Papaya Academy is a school that aims to help children and families that live in the Patayas area. It is a school dedicated to providing a quality education to impoverished children in this community. We divide the 60 visiting students into smaller groups and each advisory group welcomes 3 to 4 Papaya students. Prior to their arrival Grade 5 students prepare welcome posters, learn some Tagalog words, and help collect donations. The purpose of them visiting is so that our students get to know these students and engage in team building games, activities and shared picnic lunch (if you haven't signed up yet - you can do so here). Through these activities students learn the importance of giving back to their community by helping others. We welcome these Papaya Students back for a second visit during our February CWW.

Papaya Academy is currently in need of Rice so that they can provide food for their students. We have therefore requested that each student in the Grade 5 make a donation of Rice in order to help this school. The school also has a wishlist consisting of: dishwashing soap, powdered laundry detergent, bath soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and cooking oil. We will also be doing a Tie-Dye Activity on this day, so we have also asked some students to donate a white cotton t-shirt so that our Papaya Students will be able to do this activity. (Each grade 5 student needs to bring in a White cotton T-shirt for themselves for this activity.)

In some advisories this week students brainstormed other ways that they would like to help collect donations. We will be placing making announcements to all Middle School students in the daily announcements and during assembly time. Some students will also be making posters and others are working on some fundraising activities to buy them items from the wish list. If you have any donations of these items that you and your family would like to contribute please just drop them into any of the classrooms in the Grade 5 hallway. We will be putting these in boxes and sending them to Papaya Academy. This is a great opportunity to talk to you your child about giving back and helping others who are less fortunate. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
