Workshop Overview
MSIS is a 2 year Mathematics Specialist program for K-8 teachers. The program is a coherent sequence of 5 Institutes designed to expand teachers' understanding of the Common Core Standards, how students learn that content, evidence of student understanding, and how to work with peers in a mentoring relationship.
The institutes are four three day face to face institutes.
Upon completion of the five institutes, participants will be awarded a Math Specialist certificate from the Office of Overseas Schools AERO Project.

Attend and participate in the five 3-day face-to-face institutes during the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 school years.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution;
A valid Education Teaching License;
Currently employed teaching in an international school for a minimum of 3 years;
A letter of interest expressing a 2 year commitment to the project;
A letter of recommendation from a current school administrator
Please email the letters of interest and recommendation to Su-Yen Chan at sychan@iskl.edu.my. You will be notified within three days of submission.
Once approved please go ahead and register yourself or your team.
Registration is on first come first serve basis.

Course 3 (Assessment in the Mathematics Classroom)
The focus is on assessment of conceptual understanding and procedural knowledge. Participants will examine current research related to mathematics assessment to direct and improve instructional practices. They will explore the way in which different assessment methods are aligned with specific learning targets and develop skills in creating specific clarifying and probing questions. A focus will be on the 4 criteria for assessing mathematics proficiency.
Erma Anderson
Erma Anderson
Erma Anderson is a former high school mathematics and physics teacher and Albert Einstein Distinguished Fellow the United States Senate. As a Senior Program Officer with the Research Council, she assisted in the development of the National Science Education Standards. She is a Christa McAulliffe Fellow with the National Foundation for Improvement of Education and was a consultant with the Council for Basic Education's Schools Around the World Project, developing and implementing a protocol and series of professional development experiences that used student work to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. More recently she has been a consultant with international schools and the AERO Mathematics and Science project.
Everette Burk
Everette Burk
Everette Burk has taught for 25 years. He taught Middle School Math and Science in Anchorage, Alaska for 9 years, was a graduate assistant and adjunct faculty at Western Washington University for 3 years, and has been teaching Math and Science at ISKL for 13 years. He has also been the ISKL Middle School Math Leader for several years. Everette graduated from Weber State University with a degree in Math, Chemistry, and Computer Science for education in 1994 and earned his Masters in Education (Administration with an emphasis in Educational Technology) from Western Washington University in 2001. Everette earned his MSIS certificate in the first cohort with Erma Anderson and Steve Leinwand in Singapore 2014/15.
