Workshop Overview
MSIS is a 2 year Mathematics Specialist program for K-8 teachers. The program is a coherent sequence of 5 Institutes designed to expand teachers' understanding of the Common Core Standards, how students learn that content, evidence of student understanding, and how to work with peers in a mentoring relationship.
The institutes are four three day face to face institutes.
Upon completion of the five institutes, participants will be awarded a Math Specialist certificate from the Office of Overseas Schools AERO Project.

Attend and participate in the five 3-day face-to-face institutes during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution;
A valid Education Teaching License;
Currently employed teaching in an international school for a minimum of 3 years;
A letter of interest expressing a 2 year commitment to the project;
A letter of recommendation from a current school administrator

Once approved please go ahead and register yourself or your team.
Registration is on first come first serve basis.

Course 2 (Algebra and Operations)
The focus is on the content and the Common Core Mathematical Practices that support the Algebra and Functions progressions of the Common Core Standards. Attention will be given to the transition from arithmetic to algebra, working with quantitative change, and the description of and prediction of change.
Erma Anderson
Erma Anderson
Erma Anderson is a former high school mathematics and physics teacher and Albert Einstein Distinguished Fellow the United States Senate. As a Senior Program Officer with the Research Council, she assisted in the development of the National Science Education Standards. She is a Christa McAulliffe Fellow with the National Foundation for Improvement of Education and was a consultant with the Council for Basic Education's Schools Around the World Project, developing and implementing a protocol and series of professional development experiences that used student work to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. More recently she has been a consultant with international schools and the AERO Mathematics and Science project.
Steve Leinwand
Steve Leinwand
Steve Leinwand is a Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in Washington, D.C. and has over 30 years of leadership positions in mathematics education. His work at AIR has included technical assistance to the General Electric Foundation and to the Microsoft Math Partnership, involving work in Seattle, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee. He has overseen the development of the Algebra Assessment for the ongoing High School Longitudinal Study and co-authored "What the United States Can Learn from Singapore's World-Class Mathematic System (and what Singapore can learn from the United States)." Leinwand has also served as Intervention Task Leader for the Institute for Educational Sciences' Mathematics Professional Development Impact Study and has been the Mathematics Lead on Hazelwood (MO) East Middle School school improvement grant.
Before joining AIR in 2002, Leinwand spent 22 years as Mathematics Consultant with the Connecticut Department of Education where he was responsible for the development and oversight of statewide activities in K-12 mathematics education, including the provision of technical assistance and professional development, the evaluation of Title 1 and K-12 mathematics programs, the assessment of student achievement and teacher competency, the dissemination of information, and the coordination of programs and activities. Steve has served on the Mathematical Sciences Education Board during the development and publication of "Everybody County", as president of National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and on the NCTM Board of Directors where he helped to review NCTM's "Principles and Standards for School Mathematics".
Alan Phan
Alan Phan
Alan Phan is a former mathematics teacher in schools in California and Washington, DC. He has also worked in international schools in Mexico, Belgium, England and Spain. At present, he is pursuing his doctorate at the University of Bath in England, and is the Middle School Principal at the American International School Chennai in India. He has worked with many different programs, including the AP, IB DP and MYP programs. Mr. Phan’s passion lies with middle school and how to bring rigor to schools’ mathematics curriculum. He has worked with numerous schools in the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS) and Near East South Asia (NESA) Council of Overseas Schools to vary and integrate rigor into their instruction and assessment practices.
