EARCOS Weekend Workshop - Standing on the Shoulders of Others: Using Mentor Text to Teach Writing Craft

Workshop Overview

The use of mentor texts is far from new, but the concept has captured the attention of writing teachers across the globe. Because of its power to teach students about the craft of writing, many teachers believe that the use of mentor text is a critical part of robust, engaging writing instruction. But how does one teach with mentor text? Where can a teacher quickly find mentor text? What is the role of inquiry in using mentor text? What does it mean to “read like a writer”? These and other questions will be at the heart of this interactive and highly practical workshop. For two days, participants will immerse themselves in a study of a variety of mentor text, noticing and naming how writers shape their ideas for an audience. We’ll notice strategies writers use to captivate the reader and name how writers intentionally manipulate conventions. In addition, participants will write themselves in order to experience firsthand the power of mentor text and to create models for their students.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will leave this workshop with a handful of mentor texts that could be used in a variety of content areas and a framework for mining mentor text for upcoming lessons. This workshop is designed for any teacher of students in grades 3-12 who wants to nurture students as writers of their content.
