Welcome students and parents to fifth grade social studies and writing!  I am Ms. Foster and I teach in the Upper Yellow House here at Heritage E-STEM Middle School.

A little bit about myself: I grew up in St. Paul and attended St. Paul Public Schools K-12th grade.  I enjoy tennis, yoga, and walking my dog.  I graduated from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2003 with a B.S. in Elementary Education.  I substituted and taught at a private preschool for three years. I earned my Masters in Elementary Education in 2009. I began teaching here at Heritage the fall of 2009.  I love teaching children and watching them grow academically and socially.  I am looking forward to another great year here at Heritage!  Please let me know what I can do do support and enhance your child's learning experience .

What will 5th graders be doing in social studies?
We will be completing a variety of projects and learning activities that will incorporated into the everyday curriculum here at Heritage. Fifth graders will start out the year by exploring themes in business and economics by working thorough the curriculum of Junior Achievements' BizTown.  Students will learn the fundamental basics in understanding  important elements of financial responsibilities and work readiness by using critical thinking skills to engage in related discussions and hands-on activities.  We will also be engineering and creating models of Native American shelters, learning about trade and European exploration, discussing life in the early American colonies, as well as creating imovies and presentations in relation to our school-wide E-STEM focus.
In writing, 5th graders will be learning the convections of writing and the revision process. They will also learn how to write everything from personal narratives and opinion writing, to various forms of poetry.
