Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies

Associate Director – Peace Accords Matrix

The Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame seeks applications for an Associate Director of the Peace Accords Matrix (PAM). PAM seeks to analyze and compare all recent comprehensive peace accords together with data on their subsequent implementation in a manner useful to scholars, policymakers, and peacebuilding practitioners. In its initial phase, PAM developed a data coding system, collected verified data on 10 peace accords and their implementation, developed a website for the project, and began data collection on around 30 additional accords. As it moves into the next phase, the project, which is led by Prof. John Darby, seeks a scholar with expertise in peace processes and experience in data collection and analysis to oversee its continued development.

The Associate Director is responsible for all aspects of data collection for the project, including locating and evaluating data sources, overseeing coding of data by research assistants, coordinating review of data by scholars and regional experts, and establishing a system for updating PAM on an on-going basis. Drawing on the data collected, the Associate Director conducts individual and joint research that demonstrates PAM’s potential as a resource for both scholars and practitioners. He/she serves as a liaison with related initiatives involved in collecting data on peace and conflict, including the joint Kroc-Uppsala Peacebuilding Initiative, as well as with policymakers and practitioners seeking comparative information. The Associate Director also develops grant proposals and represents the project at academic conferences and in other venues.

The position is a non-tenure track faculty position at the Kroc Institute, renewable on a regular basis. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in sociology, political science, peace studies, or another relevant discipline; expertise in peace processes and peace accords; and a demonstrated ability to manage a database with both qualitative and quantitative dimensions.

To apply, please submit a CV, cover letter, writing sample, and three letters of reference to:
