Information-Communication Technology and Social Entrepreneurship
The Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a position in the application of information technology and social entrepreneurship to solve social and environmental problems at the local, national, and global levels. The position is open to any field in the Social Sciences at the Associate Professor or Full Professor levels, or at the advanced Assistant Professor level. The selected candidate will hold a professorial appointment in one of the departments in UCSC’s Division of Social Sciences (see below), and also serve as Director of the Global Information Internship Program (GIIP) and as Director will be the holder of the Dorothy E. Everett Chair in Global Information and Social Entrepreneurship Endowed Chair. GIIP is an innovative digital social enterprise program established in 1998 and self-managed by undergraduate student Fellows and staff.
GIIP applies the tools of information-communication technology (ICT) and social entrepreneurship (SE) to empower UCSC students to advance social justice, sustainability, and the public interest.
The selected candidate will be an outstanding researcher on issues arising from the application of information technologies to solve social and environmental problems as well as social activists committed to extending the tools of ICT and SE to excluded communities through collaborative partnerships with civil society groups (e.g., non-profits, NGOs, foundations, community-based organizations, and schools). The selected candidate will also possess very strong leadership and organizational skills.
Applicants should have expertise in ICT applications, demonstrate a strong commitment to mentoring GIIP Fellows and other undergraduates, guide students on appropriate ICT applications, develop GIIP’s social entrepreneurial partnerships, and raise internal and external resources through collaboration with GIIP alumni, donors, associated faculty, and UCSC development officers.
As the Director of GIIP and holder of the Everett Chair, the selected candidate will hold a 50 percent administrative appointment in the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies, and a 50 percent professorial appointment in a department in the Division of Social Sciences, and will be expected to teach courses in support of GIIP’s goals. The normal teaching load in the division is four courses over three quarters. While holding the Director appointment, the incumbent’s teaching load is expected to be two courses. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable.
The Division of Social Sciences includes eight departments: Anthropology, Economics, Education, Environmental Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Politics, Psychology, and Sociology. It confers the most undergraduate degrees on campus, and each department has a Ph.D. program. The faculty members in the division conduct high quality, cutting edge, interdisciplinary research. RANK: Advanced Assistant Professor (tenure-track), Associate Professor or Full Professor (tenured)
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, demonstrated record of research, teaching, and service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Leadership and Organizational skills and experience; Information Communication Technology (ICT) knowledge and experience; Teaching excellence.
