Game setup and Guidelines
The following guidelines include the only elements of the Laws of the Game that apply to the AYSO Short Sided Game Program for U-8:
The field size is 80 yards long and 40 yards wide (maximum).
All fields are marked by the city. As such, we will use those lines already marked on the fields. The markings on the field should include:
The U-8 divisions will use the Penalty Area marked on the field as the Goal Area for the purposes of Goal Kicks and to define the area the goal keeper may use their hands. In most cases, the Penalty Area is a standard size (18 yards long and 44 yards wide).
- A halfway line the width of the field, marked equidistant between the goal lines.
- A center circle with an eight (8) yard radius in the center of the field.
Goals on these fields should be 7 feet high and 7 yards (21 feet) wide. However, due to the fact these fields are used for other purposes, some fields might have goals which are 8 feet high and 8 yard (24 feet) wide. All games will be played with the goals on the fields.
A size 3 ball is used for U-7 and U-8 games.
There will be 7 players per team on field; with goalkeepers. Nine players maximum on roster.
Substitutions are between periods, at halftime and for injuries. at all levels of play.
Duration of Game:
All U-8 games are played with two 20-minute halves which are divided into two 10-minute periods ("quarters"). Substitutions are made at the end of each quarter, at halftime and for injuries.
A minimum of 2 quarters is required for each player and no one player can play 4 quarters until everyone has played 3 quarters.
The Start of Play:
The game should be started with a kick-off in the middle of the field.
A coin toss is used to determine which team kicks off to start the game and the other team kicks off to start the second half.
Opponents must be six yards from the center mark while kick-off is in progress.
Method of Scoring:
See U-8 Coaching Manual.
Fouls & Misconduct

Direct free kicks are awarded the attacking team inside the defending team's goal area should be taken from the nearest point on the goal area line in front of the goal. There are no penalty kicks. Referees will work cooperatively with the coaches and eliminate the need for cautions and send-offs. Do not show yellow or red cards
AYSO certified U-8 Officials or higher are required for U-8 games.
If no U-8 Official or higher certified referee is signed up by 6 PM the day before the match, then the match will be canceled (and not rescheduled).
The U-8 Official should briefly explain any infringements (which occur during the match) to the player(s) and encourage proper play and sporting behavior. As with all games, every effort should be made to keep the game moving and free from stoppages for doubtful infractions. Let them play and enjoy.
