A big shift that happens in 3rd grade is that most students are no longer "learning to read" but are "reading to learn". In class students will do a variety of reading activities.

• Independent reading with a book they choose from the classroom library
• Reading in a small group with teacher support
• Fluency practice that helps students read naturally out loud
• Reading to answer questions about the text
• Writing about what they have read

Homework: Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes each night! This reading can be done by themselves but there are also a lot of benefits to reading aloud to others in their family.
