Meet Mr. Williams

Who is Mr. Williams?

Mr. Williams has been a teacher at Neuqua Valley High School since 2014, and a Neuqua Wildcat since 2006.

Derek Williams grew up in District 204. He attended Cowlishaw Elementary School, Welch Elementary School, Scullen Middle School, and then Neuqua Valley High School. While at Neuqua, Derek took a wide variety of classes, though his favorites were always his social studies classes. Derek also played the saxophone in the Marching Wildcats, played Ultimate on the school's newly-formed team, and volunteered with the Special Olympics and Peer Partners program. He graduated from Neuqua in 2010, knowing that he wanted to be a social studies teacher, just like the teachers that had most inspired him during his high school years. Sure enough, he went on to major in Social Science Education at Olivet Nazarene University, and never doubted his choice. Derek graduated Magna Cum Laude from Olivet in 2014.

While exploring career options all over the country, Derek got a surprising call from Neuqua, who was in sudden need of a long-term substitute position in the Social Studies Department. Happy to help out, and excited to work in the school that had first inspired him and ignited his passion for the social sciences, he took the job. He worked as a substitute at Neuqua Valley for most of the 2014-2015 school year, and was hired to a permanent position the following school year. Mr. Williams absolutely loves working at Neuqua Valley, even though he never could have guessed he would do so when he graduated high school. He has an intense interest in the students of this community and loves to come to work every day. In addition to teaching, Mr. Williams also coaches football at Scullen Middle School (another alma mater) and is a faculty advisor for Neuqua's Youth & Government program and Model UN program.
