NIU-Enhancing Engineering Pathways Program

NIU-Enhancing Engineering Pathways Program (NIU-EEP) is a program sponsored by the Motorola Solutions Foundation for girls in grades 5-8 to explore the field of engineering through a series of "Saturday Engineering Workshops (SEW)" held  at NIU-Naperville from November 18th, 2017 all the way till May 12th, 2018.  This program which is a partnership between the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology @NIU and the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois and Girls Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is being conducted for the tenth year and has been made available to girls in 5-8th grades at a very minimal cost of $250 (excluding the girl scout membership fee of $25 and administrative fee of $15) for the entire duration. This also includes a week long summer day camp to be held at the NIU, DeKalb campus. This year the registrations have been opened up to a few selective 5th graders as well. Girls who get into the program in their 5th - 8th grades, move up to their high school years working on different hands-on engineering projects every year before getting an opportunity to serve as a HS mentor to the newer middle school girls. As a HS mentor, girls have opportunities to pick volunteer hours and also get paid from the program. If you wish to read the success stories of several mentors, please go to our FB page: "https://www.facebook.com/NIUEEP/". This is a wonderful opportunity for middle school girls to network and learn about science and engineering careers in addition to the large number of hands-on activities carried out during these workshop sessions.

The deadline for applying to this program is November 08th, 2017. Teachers could directly email the letter of recommendation toDr. Suma Rajashankar at sumedhras@gmail.com before the deadline. The announcement for this program has been made on the IPSD district website in the e-folder section as well.

An Interview with Mr. Yadgir

                                    by Ananya Gondesi!

Recently, I was given the opportunity to interview Mr. Yadgir and three of his Griz Leaders. Their answers have proved to me that being a Griz Leader can really impact those around you. If you don’t know who Mr.Yadgir is, he is an ELA and Social Studies teacher in 6-2. Mrs.Torza, a health teacher, also leads the Griz leaders. Here are  the questions I asked Mr.Yadgir, and his responses. (*NOTICE THESE RESPONSES ARE PARAPHRASED. THIS IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID.*)

What are the Griz Leaders’ best accomplishments over the years?

Mr.Y: They do a lot, but I honestly think that when they do community work, and fundraisers, you know, help the school...that would be their best accomplishment.

Do you recommend future 8th graders to join Griz Leaders?

Mr.Y: Yes, definitely! If they are interested in helping, stepping up, then definitely they should join.

Could you explain what a Griz Leader’s job is?

Mr.Y: They have to be an upstander...instead of a bystander. They work to fix things, and the are the people to represent the best in students here at Granger.

Why do you think that Griz leaders are important to Granger?

Mr.Y: They offer students a role model to look up to, they are there to help all students...they are a listening ear also...and also they show what it means to be a leader.

How can students get involved?

Mr.Y: Halfway through  the 7th grade year, 7th graders can apply to the ‘cubby program’, they have to get recommendations from teachers, and then they can ‘begin their training’.

I also interviewed some of the Griz leaders themselves, and they(Megan, Kevyn and Devin) answered my questions without hesitation:

What are your responsibilities as Griz Leaders?

Megan: We have to step up, you know and help others with….lots of things.

Devin: We have to make sure that people stay on track and we help 6th graders get used to the school, so they don’t feel too awkward inside of the school.

Kevyn: We give people a chance to...you know...know where they are going!

Do you get to do any special projects?

Megan: We get to go to FMSC(feed my starving children), we get to organize events, like pep assemblies and stuff, and we get to help 6th graders when they come during the summer to put stuff in their lockers.

Devin: We get to do Pack the house, and we get to do the morning announcements….ya.

Why did you want to get involved with griz leaders?

Megan: I wanted to help the school and the community, and wanted to get involved, and it just…you know gives...positive vibes.

Kevyn: We have a chance to interact with lots of other students in the whole school.

Devin: It practices leadership, and it kinda tests you and helps you learn...in a way.

What are some of the projects you guys are working on?

*all said pretty much the same answers, so I’m just going to list what they said*

  • Pack the House

  • Packing Goodie Bags for the 5k

  • Working for the 5k

  • Hurricane donations/Red Cross

Thank you Mr.Yadgir, Megan, Kevyn, and Devin ! You guys are the stars of the school!      - submitted by Ananya Gondesi, 9/23/17

Goodbye Edline!!!
As you probably know by now, Edline is gone! Instead of Edline, every teacher has a Google Website that they will use to post assignments and other information you need to know for their class. You can use this page to get to your assignments and other important links. Click on the "Staff Contacts" tab in the top right corner of this page. Once the page opens, just find your teacher's name on the directory and click on it:  you will be directed to their Google Site. Once you are on a teacher site you will find links to emails, textbooks, online resources (like Google Classroom) and a calendar. You can also learn fun information about your team of teachers!
