Exposing HDFS for those of our clients who use Windows technology was also somewhat of an issue. There were some good patches on hadoop JIRA that implemented the WebDAV protocol on top of the Java API – most of the work was done there. We fixed a few issues and adapted them to work with the newer versions of hadoop, and also enabled support for authentication and HDFS-permissions. This was co-developed with Contextweb – check their nice hadoop presentations at NY Hadoop User Group meeting.
WebDAV client is built into both Windows and Mac and there are plenty of clients available for Linux. For a quick start check our instructions.
