About the Department
History as a discipline is a dynamic and growing field, in India and outside. Scholarship in history over the last few decades has opened up new frontiers for the discipline. Undergraduate courses in history at the Indraprastha College for Women introduce students to exciting work being done around a range of themes. The programme inculcates a receptivity to modern methodological approaches, and exposes students to a stimulating and cooperative intellectual atmosphere and a wide range of research resources.
Our strengths include faculty specialization in different periods of South Asian history and in themes related to religion, culture, caste, marginalized groups, environment, trade and histories of labour and migration.
Class room teaching often includes illustrations and clippings through video projection. Field visits (both, in Delhi and to sites outside) and excursions to museums and exhibitions are undertaken in order to understand aspects of history, especially history of art & architecture, through an interdisciplinary approach to the study of images, monuments, and objects. This is often supplemented with special lectures by scholars with specific research interests and annual seminars/conferences where scholars and students present papers. We believe that these methodologies enable our students to analyze diverse sources and communicate their ideas effectively.
