Kevin Brown

Kevin Brown is in his tenth year in the Iowa City School District where he currently teaches at Northwest Junior High.  In addition to lessons for students in grades 7-8, he co-directs a 7th and 8th Grade Concert Band and two junior high jazz bands.

Brown received his B.M.E. (97) and M.M. (07) in Music Education (both with a jazz emphasis) from the University of Northern Iowa.  Prior to Iowa City, Kevin taught at CAL/Dows High School and Price Laboratory School/NUHS (Cedar Falls).  While at PLS, he also supervised UNI music education students during their second-level practicum, worked with music education classes, and partnered with the AEA in leading local professional development.

During his nineteen years of teaching, concert bands have earned only unanimous Division I ratings amongst other accolades including three performances at the IBA Conference (2000, 2003, 2016).  Jazz Bands under his direction have garnered awards and honors including an IBA performance in 2019 and many visits to the Iowa Jazz Championships where they regularly placed in the top 5.  He has also served as the NCIBA President, was acknowledged by IMEA as one of 13 outstanding educators in Iowa, and has twice been nominated for the R.J. McElroy Gold Star Teacher (for which he was a semi-finalist in 2010).

For five years, Brown was the coordinator and conductor of the Celebration Iowa Jazz Band, which allowed him to tour and work with talented high school students from many different schools.  He has served for eight years as the conductor of the Jim McDonough Orchestra, a group that tours and performs with the popular Steinway artist.  He is active as a clinician and adjudicator and enjoys conducting honor bands around the state.
