Integrated small bore inspection system

An integrated inspection system for detecting laser light reflected from the inside surface of a small diameter cylinder is shown in Figure 1. The inspection system includes a probe, spindle and linear motion stage and does not need a slip ring to transfer data from the probe to a data acquisition system.

Large bore imaging probe

A photo of a probe for detecting laser light reflected from the inside surface of a large diameter cylinder is shown in Figure 2. The probe shaft can be replaced by another tool holder matched to the spindle intended for use with the probe. The shaft and spindle rotor must have a clear through hole along the spindle axis. A slip ring is required on the opposite side of the spindle to transmit signals from the rotating probe to the data acquisition system. If the probe is not rotating, no slip ring is required. This would be the case for a measurement in which the part is rotating. If only a linear scan is needed, no spindle is required either.

Large bore centering tool

The centering tool incorporates a probe that is identical to the large bore imaging probe, but with a longer shaft to accommodate a slip ring on the same side of the spindle as the probe. In this configuration the probe can operate without a clear through hole in the spindle rotor and can be used interchangeably with other machine tools to align the part and spindle along a common axis. A photo of this probe is shown in Figure 3.

Large Bore Imaging and Profile Probe

A modified version of the large bore probe can display both an image of the surface finish as well as surface profile. A version of the probe is shown in Figure 4 with an optional longer shaft and slip ring.

Small bore imaging probe

A version of the small bore imaging probe that requires a slip ring is shown in

Figure 5. An advantage of this probe is that it is less sensitive to alignment than the integrated small bore inspection system. The version of the probe shown below has an optional longer shaft to accommodate a slip ring directly in back of the probe.
