Click the apple in the top left corner, select About this Mac.
Select the Storage tab to see how much space is available.
You want MORE THAN 20% available for best performance and backup speed.
First and foremost, delete or move personal content that might be on your computer.
Music
Movies & Video
Photos
Apps, including iPhone/iPad apps inside iTunes
Scan through your downloads folder, and your desktop for unnecessary files.
Consider using Gmail for accessing email, and deleting folders under the "On My Mac" heading in Apple Mail.
The next likely storage hogs are backups of your iPhones or iPads, which can be very large. Click here to locate and delete those.
After that, moving entirely to Gmail by using the website and NOT using Apple Mail at all is the best way to free space. If you're ready to do that, contact IT and we'll delete Apple Mail for you.
If after taking those actions you're still running out of space, this is a perfect use for the Ω Sync folder and using Box! With Box you can archive an unlimited amount of data on the internet and keep it OFF your computer.
If your files are in your Ω Sync folder here's how to move them OFF your computer and save space but KEEP them on the Box website for safe keeping.
Go to the box.com website and navigate to your Ω Sync folder and find a folder you can move off your computer.
Move your mouse over the folder and click the three dots or right click the folder for the options menu.
Select Move and locate your Ω Archive folder and proceed to move that folder to the Ω Archive folder.
Once the folder has been moved, the tool on your computer should shortly REMOVE that folder from your computer but KEEP the copy on the box.com website.
The less you have in your Ω Sync folder, the faster it will work and more instantaneous moving folders and files will be!
Next, make extra sure that you're not also syncing your Ω Archive folder to your computer, which sometimes happens after moving items to the Ω Sync folder.
Navigate to your personal folder on the Box website , select Ω Archive, and make sure that it's NOT set to Sync.
You can confirm this by the ABSENCE of a checkmark next to the folder name.
You DO NOT want it to look like this. See the checkmark?
If it does, simply click the three dots on this folder, and mark it to Unsync like the image below.
That's it!
THANK YOU!
