In science this year students will be studying animal classification, learning the difference between vertebrate and invertebrate animals along with the behaviors and adaptations that animals use to help them survive.  We will also be investigating the respiratory system and the circulatory system to find out how these two systems work.  Our final unit of the year will be a look at the water cycle and how it effects our weather.

First Trimester

 Links For Students

Students will classify animals as vertebrates or invertebrates according to their characteristics.

  • ·      identify animals as vertebrates or invertebrates
  • ·      classify mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles as vertebrates
  • ·      identify the characteristics of the groups of vertebrates
  • ·      classify worms, mollusks, and insects as invertebrates

Students will classify the needs, adaptations, and behaviors of animals.

·      identify the characteristics of those groups of given invertebrates

study different animal adaptations, behaviors and needs

Animal Unit:

Yucky Worm World - fun, lots of facts about worms

Second Trimester

Students will describe the parts of the human respiratory system and how they contribute to the function of this system.

  • identify the parts of the respiratory system and their functions
  • identify the function of the respiratory system
  • study the affects of exercise on breathing rates

Students will describe the parts of the human circulatory system and how they contribute to the function of this system.

  • identify the function of the circulatory system
  • label the parts and function of the heart
  • identify the major parts of the circulatory system and define their functions
  • diagram the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body
  • define the parts of blood

Human Body Systems:

The Circulatory System - Get Body Smart

The Heart Cross-section: Practice labeling the heart.

How the Body Works- great resources for both the respiratory and circulatory systems. (Other systems are there too)
Third Trimester

Students will explain how weather contributes to the perpetuation of the water cycle.

  • diagram the water cycle and how it relates to clouds
  • identify types of clouds by their proper names
  • construction and demonstrate the function of a barometer
  • explain how the water cycle effects weather
