Delivered From the Law of Sin and Death (vv1-8)

What are the laws in these verses?

• What does it mean to be “in Christ?”

– We are baptized into that relationship (Rom. 6:3-4; Gal. 3:26-27; 1 Cor. 12:13).

– We maintain it by walking faithfully in the light of God’s Word (1 John 1:5-10).

– We lose it only by allowing sin to become full-grown heart and life (James 1:13-15).

We Have the Holy Spirit (vv9-17)

He indwells us (Acts 2:38; Galatians 4:6)

• He is our seal (Ephesians 1:13)

• He is our deposit (Ephesians 1:14)

• He strengthens us (Ephesians 3:14-21)

• He aids us in godly living (Galatians 5:16-26)

• He intercedes for us (Rom. 8:26-27)

• He acts providentially (Matthew 4:1)

We Have the Hope of Resurrection (vv18-25)

Hope changes our view of suffering.

• What is the “creation” here?

– Mankind generally (but verse 19)

– Church as new creation (but vv19, 22-23)

– Physical creation (see Psalms 96:11-13; 98:7-9)

• Verse 23: groaning inwardly shows the imperfection of this life, even in Christ.

We Have the Perfect Providence of God (vv26-30)

Verses 28-30: Key lessons

– Not all things are good, but work for good.

– Goal is not happiness, but Christlikeness.

• Predestination issue: tie together 2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; Matthew 22:1-14.

• Foreknowledge is a fact (Acts 2:23).

We Have the Absolute Assurance of God’s Love (vv31-39)

With God on our side, nothing else really matters (vv31-34).

• To the disciple who holds on to God, nothing in this life, no matter how bad, will ever separate him from the love of Christ (vv35-39).

• “The Advocate” illustration (a modern-day parable)
