Our colleague, Ștefan Andrei, has successfully defended his PhD thesis, entitled: "Illuminating the microbial ecology of extreme saline meromictic lakes". Here is a summary of his thesis.

Dr. Mihai Miclăuș awarded 124k EUR for "Understanding the control of nuclear-gene-expression by the cytoplasmic genomes using maize isonuclear lines", which is funded by the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research, through the Young Research Teams Programme.

Dr. Cristian Coman awarded 1 million EUR for the project "Methodological guide for monitoring antibiotic residues and antimicrobial resistance in the environment as a supporting instrument for an enhanced quality management of surface waters and groundwater", part of the EEA Grants scheme
Three post-doctoral research projects, totalling € 200 000 (approx.  66 000 each) awarded to Dr. Ioan Bacila, Dr. Bogdan Hurdu, and Dr. Adrian Stoica. These are:

Dr. Sorina Fărcaș will lead the five-member team of our institute in a Joint Applied Research Project, coordinated by the Institute of Archeology and Art History, Cluj-Napoca: "Seeing the unseen. Landscape archaeology on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire at Porolissum (Romania)", funded by the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research (PN-II-PT-PCCA-2011-3-0924).

Dr. Mihai Miclaus awarded 2.000.000 RON (€ 440 000 equivalent) for:
"Evaluating the existing genetic diversity among local maize inbred lines towards developing new hybrids, with superior qualities and increased productivity" - project funded under the Joint Applied Research Projects Call, PN-II-PT-PCCA-2011-3.1-0511, of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research. Half of the budget will be shared by the two partners in the consortium: the Agricultural Research and Development Station, Turda, and the Oncology Institutute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuta", Cluj-Napoca  

Dr. Adela Halmagyi awarded 1 397 000 RON (€ 323 000 equivalent) for:
"Assessment of genetic stability in cryopreserved Romanian elite tomato (Lycopersicon
esculentum Mill.) cultivars" - project funded under the IDEI-PCE2011 call of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research. 

Dr. Cosmin Sicora awarded 3 811 557 RON (€890 000 equivalent) for: 
"Biotechnology in conversion of solar energy into hydrogen using photosynthetic microorganisms"; a project to which the EU is the major financial contributor through the European Regional Development Fund.
