WELCOME to the HIDDEN VALLEY WILD HORSE PROTECTION FUND headquarters for VOLUNTEERING!!!
Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund, along with its Alliance of Wild Horse Advocates partners, have proudly fought long and hard for the protection and preservation of the historic Virginia Range wild horses. HVWHPF volunteers have worked for over 30 years installing fences and cattleguards, moving horses out of congested streets and highways, and monitoring the health and welfare of these horses. In 2012, HVWHPF opened its rescue operations in protest of the removal of 149 wild horses from the Virginia Range. We rescued every one of those horses and more, and have participated in the subsequent rescue of over 50 additional horses in finding good, quality forever homes for them. We currently have 145 wild horses in our care.
In March 2015, a landmark management agreement was signed between the State of Nevada and Return to Freedom to implement the humane management of the historic Virginia Range wild horses!!! Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund is a Cooperating non-profit organization participating in this agreement. As such, we seek volunteers for the many wonderful and rewarding projects needing your help!!!
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
There are approximately 2,000 horses on the Virginia Range, the mountains east of Reno, Nevada, an area covering almost 300,000 acres of primarily private property. As such, these horses belong to the State of Nevada - they are our horses, your horses, America's horses! And because they don't live on federal lands, they are also not protected by the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971. Our local Wild Horse Alliance, with tremendous support and encouragement from good people like you, fought hard for this agreement and we intend to see it implemented in a professional, responsible, and effective manner.
The agreement calls for the implementation of fertility control measures for these horses. We need to continue installing fences from south Damonte Ranch to the Virginia Foothills and then further south to Pleasant Valley. We need to ensure that all existing fences are maintained in good shape. We need to move horses to safety when they find themselves in at risk situations (our front yards and streets), monitor water sources and develop alternative water sources as fail-safe measures to our drought prone climate. We need to track and document all the horses on the range and ensure that our fertility control data is complete and accurate.
HVWHPF has 145 rescued horses in its care. We need to raise funds to feed them (they can no longer wander and graze freely), we need to pay for their board and watering, veterinary, farrier, and transportation needs. We need to gentle them so they can find good, quality forever adoptive homes - that means working on our website, or promoting them on facebook, etc., or doing site visits, or transporting them, or brushing those who have graduated gentling class. We need pens cleaned, fundraising opportunities created and executed, stories about the horses written (both the wild ones and our rescued horse kids). We need people to attend local government meetings to ensure we know about anything that could affect our horses, and people interested in monitoring our State Legislature to make sure they don't try to cut wild horses off from accessing water!!!!!!! (They keep trying!)
There's lots to do and something for everyone! Normally, our volunteers will never come in contact with wild horses. We encourage people to admire them from afar and never engage or get close to them. We want to ensure they remain wild and free, on the range, where they are safe and away from our streets and highways. In order to accomplish that, we need your help and enthusiasm.
Become a Member of Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund. Your dues will go to fund programs for our rescued horses as well as the wild ones. If you want to take that next step and get involved, we'd love to have you on our team of volunteers!!!

About Our Organization
Hidden Valley Wild Horse Protection Fund is an all-volunteer Nevada 501(c)3 non-profit organization headquartered in Reno, Nevada.
Volunteers have been working for over 30 years to protect and preserve the historic Virginia Range wild horses living right in our very backyards....and sometimes grazing in our front yards!!!! Teams of hardworking people have laid miles of fencing and installed cattleguards in an effort to ensure the horses are safe and where they should be - on the range, wild and free.
As our organization has grown and evolved to be the largest wild horse rescue in northwest Nevada, our need for good, reliable volunteers has also grown. We have an abundance of volunteer opportunities that we need to fill to help us manage projects to benefit the wild ones and make sure our rescued herd are well cared for.
