6th grade: 6th grade completed the novel I am Malala with a focus on summarizing, plot structure, author's perspective, and vocabulary. We are in the midst of module 4: Courage in Crisis and are writing an explanatory piece about Malala's point of view and her response to challenges. The students watched her Nobel Peace Prize speech, participated in a Socratic Seminar, and will have a vocabulary assessment next week.
7th grade: 7th grade is diving deep into Module 4, which is centered around the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia 1793. We are reading both a historical fiction novel (Fever 1793) and excerpts of a nonfiction supplemental text (An American Plague). The students are looking at how the events and details are told similarly/differently through different texts, genres, and authors. We have also learned about the yellow fever epidemic through websites and online research.
