6th grade: 6th graders are reading short stories and poetry for the month of May. Our first short stories centered around irony and we are currently in the midst of poetry: both analyzing and writing. The students are constructing different types of poems with a focus of descriptive word choice and figurative language.
7th grade: 7th grade is diving deep into Module 4, which is centered around the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia 1793. We are reading both a historical fiction novel (Fever 1793) and excerpts of a nonfiction supplemental text (An American Plague). The students are looking at how the events and details are told similarly/differently through different texts, genres, and authors. We have also learned about the yellow fever epidemic through websites and online research. The students recently shared a slideshow presentation with the class about effects of the yellow fever epidemic and crisis in Philadelphia. They also had a vocabulary assessment and Socratic Seminar this week.
