6th grade: 6th grade is in the process of reading Out of the Dust  with a focus on figurative language, imagery,  and vocabulary. Out of the Dust, a historical fiction novel, is written in a  poem and diary format about the Dust Bowl. The students are creating a cause/effect essay about how hardships have altered Billie Jo's perspective. The essay includes four paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. They have been having great discussions in class!

7th grade: 7th grade's module 2 novel is Code Talker, which focuses on the Navajo Code Talkers in World War II.  The students began with preview activities about Navajo history and the role of the Code Talkers. We are learning about elements of the Navajo culture and how different aspects give Ned strength.  The students participated in a Socratic Seminar this week.  They shared feedback that they are enjoying the novel so far, especially the social studies connections.
