Drought

Specific TFK article about CA drought:

Drought in California

The gold state is experiencing its most severe dry spell in over a century

JANUARY 31, 2014

By TFK Staff

While the new year has brought freezing temperatures and snowstorms to much of the country, California has seen little precipitation. The state is experiencing the worst drought in its 153-year history.

California governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency on Friday, January 17. "We can't make it rain, but we can be much better prepared for the terrible consequences that California's drought now threatens," said Brown. The governor has asked Californians to reduce their use of water by 20%.

The drought is taking a big toll on farmers and ranchers, who have had to leave fields unsown and sell off cattle. California is the top farming state in the U.S. Its farms supply Americans with broccoli, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and other crops. The drought is expected to result in billions of dollars' worth of losses.

The extreme dryness also poses an increased threat of wildfires. A fire near Los Angeles on January 16 burned more than 1,700 acres.

California often has droughts, but not one has been as severe as this one. The best the state can do is conserve, prepare, and hope for rain.
