What's happening in STEAM at South Elementary?

What to expect in the first few weeks of school...
Students will begin the school year with an engineering challenge.  This will be the first opportunity to use the engineering design process.  We will begin the year talking about what it means to have a growth mindset, and apply it in the first challenge.  It's not always about succeeding on the first try - it's about making an effort, learning from mistakes, and reaching for high levels to persevere through a challenge.

During the second specials rotation, students will get a refresher on how to be a responsible Digital Citizen.  As  access to improving technology becomes easier, it is even more important to review internet safety with our students.  Students will learn the importance of protecting private information and passwords, avoiding contact with unknown websites, and protecting our computers from viruses.

During the third specials rotation, students will have the first opportunity of the year to practice typing skills using the home keys.  This is a fun cycle, as we spend it playing an age-appropriate typing game.  Students in upper grades will calculate their average score (used to keep track of improvement throughout the year) and students in lower grades will simply focus on letter recognition and location on the keyboard.

Mrs. Ernstes will be celebrating her 13th year of teaching this year.  She earned her Bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in 2005, and went on to complete a Master's degree from Michigan Technological University in 2014.
Mrs. Ernstes' son Jacob attends South Elementary and her husband is a teacher at the HFC.  Go Eagles!
