Summer Reading

The 3 B's of Reading by Jim Trelease, author of the READ ALOUD HANDBOOK offers a simple brochure about ways to encourage children to read at your home. Click here to read.

Hoover Public Library
Summer reading helps children continue growing their skills while they enjoy favorite literature and informational books.  Hoover is fortunate to have the Hoover Public Library ready to help your child find those favorites this summer.  Their ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, READ  program launched on May 23, 2016.  Stop by and register your reader for this free program. Students are given a reading log and record book titles and number of pages they've read.  They can then bring the log to the library and get a ticket for every 100 pages they read.  Next, they can spend their tickets on prizes.  We encourage students to read for fun this summer, and the library has great choices for readers to select. Registered readers can begin receiving tickets on June 1. The last day to redeem prizes is Wednesday, August 3.  A drawing for a bike will take place on Thursday, August 4.   The Hoover library also keeps track of which Hoover elementary school has the most readers reading the most pages.  The schools with the biggest totals get free books for their school library.  Link to learn more: http://www.hooverlibrary.org/kidzone

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
Be a reading superhero this summer by joining the free Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge that encourages kids to read as many pages as they can this summer and to log how many minutes they read. Scholastic also offers prizes.  This summer reading club is totally online.  Readers can begin registering on May 9, and the challenge continues until September 9, 2016.

Barnes and Noble

Each summer, Barnes and Noble gives young readers the opportunity to earn a free book by reading 3 books and completing a journal about the books they've read.  The opening ceremony for the Summer Reading Triathlon is on Saturday, June 4 at 11 AM at Barnes and Noble stores, nation wide, including the Hoover store at Patton Creek. Kids will get to vote on their favorite heroes and places in beloved books by filling out a ballot and nominating their gold, silver, and bronze-medaled books in each group.  Voting runs from June 4 to August 21.  Kids can vote as manytimes as they'd like to help move their favorite choices up the leader board.
